Reclaiming Executive Powers

Hello My Fellow Bookclubing Americans,
I would like to extend to you my (somewhat)deepest regrets about my previous failures as your president. (Some of) You chose me, and I did not live up to the office with which I was (forcefully) entrusted. However, now at this (not so very) critical juncture of our journey we cannot afford (Elder Hales) to dwell on the errors of the past. We must (I guess) and will (if you want) move forward into the light of a brighter literary future (where we might read some of the books). Do not ask what the UGbookclub can do for you, but what you can do for UR(get it)bookclub and all that.
Therefore, the Under Ground Bookclub successfully resumed its meetings Tuesday last where we debated, filibustered, and eventually voted and about our summer book list. We democratically decided on three summer book choices that you may pick from for yourself.
1. The Giver series, Lois Lowry: I know, you probably read The Giver at least once, but did you know they are part of a three book series? The follow-ups are Gathering Blue and The Messenger. Everyone had a different opinion on which is best, so read them and make your own choice.
2. Uncle Tom's Cabin, Harriet Beecher Stowe: Doug says 'It's sad.' The rest of us say, 'It's a classic. We should read it.'
3. The Great Brain (series), John Dennis Fitzgerald: Remember how you read this in fourth grade and it was really good...yeah, it was. These are stories of CATHOLICS that lived in PRICE, UTAH. A long time ago. Crazy, but mostly true. Definitely fine summer fun for all. Enjoy.

In other news the UGB will be sponsoring a read-aloud of Shakespeare's Henry the 5th (part of the USF summer season, staring the indomitable Brian Vaughn) for next months meeting, tentatively scheduled for May 14th at 6:30 at Miranda's. Bring a copy of the script, or a computer to read it off the internet, we will assign parts when you arrive.

Brian Says,
Good Night and Good Luck!

REVOLUTION!

The Queen, along with the Colonel and the club puppeteer, have decided to stage a revolt against the powers that be of the book club. As such, there will be a revolution party entitled "Let Them Eat Cake," in which there will be a mad time of litarary works had by all, along with, naturally, the partaking of cake.

This revolution party will commence on Tuesday, April 21 at 8:30 p.m. at the apartment of the Queen and Colonel. All those who wish to attend may bring an appropriate children's book in celebration of this event. Remember, servo is specialis... dico sulum.

Hello Bookclub!

Hey, I was just wondering if anything is going on with the club anymore. What books are being read?

Dec 9 Meeting

We will be having a book club meeting on December 9 at 8:00 p.m. at Heather's house. This will be the only meeting in December. We will be very briefly discussing November's book, "The Invention of Hugo Cabret," and then reading an adaptation of "A Christmas Carol" by Charles Dickens, adapted by Miranda. You can find the script at the previously linked site.

After the club meeting, there may or may not be a viewing of "The Scarlet Pimpernell." But, ssshhhhhhh, don't tell anyone!

Don't forget to come! It will be really fun!

It's good to see that the meetings are still happening. We're still good up here in Orem.

November's book

The November book is called The Invention of Hugo Cabret. I've heard many good things about it, and to say the least it's unconventional. The book is about 500 pages, but don't be deceived it's fast read. The Author/ Illustrator is Brian Selznick.

Our next meeting will be held at 8:30 on the 11th of November in the usual location (ask someone if you don't know where that is). Also feel free to bring a friend, or to remind your friends... our numbers have been a little thinner lately than they used to be.
So come and share this cool book with us.

October Book and Meeting

The book that we're reading in October is Kami's suggestion: "The Tale of Despereaux" by Kate DiCamillo. We're reading it in preparation for the movie, which is coming out on December 19 of this year. It is actually starring the voices of famous names, such as Matthew Broderick, Dustin Hoffman, Sigourney Weaver, Christopher Lloyd, Kevin Kline, William H Macy, etc... and of course, Miranda's favorite actress, Emma Watson, is playing Princess Pea.

Our next book club meeting will be on October 14 at Heather's house. Please bring a short book (most likely children's) that you can share with others.

I have also noted that October 14 is a full moon. I may want to take a walk up the canyon trail that night. Or become a True T-bird. Servo is specialis... dico sulum.
